Matthew Cornish - Hero
British soldier Cpl. Matthew Cornish gave his life for the future of Iraq. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.

The father of a British soldier killed in Iraq has paid tribute to his son and said he was very proud of him.

Corporal Matthew Cornish, 29, was serving with the 1st Battalion The Light Infantry. He was married with two young children.

He was injured in an explosion and taken to hospital, where he later died.
His father Robin, 60, from Pool-in-Wharfedale, West Yorkshire, said: "I'm proud of him as a soldier and as a son. He did the Army proud."

"He would have got on. He was determined to go up the ladder and he would have got there," he said.

Cpl Cornish, who grew up near Otley, West Yorkshire, was married to Abby, 28, and had two children, Ethan, aged three, and one-year-old Libby.

He joined the Army in Leeds and was stationed in Cyprus before serving in Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone and Iraq.

His third tour of the country, in the 20th Armoured Brigade, was three months old when he was killed.

The sacrifice that Matthew made is not the end. His family has made a sacrifice too. The terrorists took from Ethan and Libby their father. A sacrifice they shall not even understand they have made for many years to come.

Sorry we couldn't make it for your BBQ, mate, but it's probably best that I don't put any more pie on. I'm sure you were having a good laugh at the sky lantern as we ran for cover, hoping it wouldn't land in a corn field and set it alight.

We're always thinking of you and you're sorely missed. But I'm sure you'll always be around, thinking up some hilarious prank.

Until we meet again, for a pint and a chat.

☆ If every tear we shed for you, became a star up above.☆ You'd stroll in Heavens garden lit with everlasting love ☆ If only we could turn back time, Life once again would be so fine. ☆ Time would pass, you'd still be here, To have, to hold, to love so dear.☆
