Matthew Cornish - Hero
British soldier Cpl. Matthew Cornish gave his life for the future of Iraq. He leaves behind a wife
and two young children.
The father of a British soldier killed in Iraq has paid tribute to his son and said he was very
proud of him.
Corporal Matthew Cornish, 29, was serving with the 1st Battalion The Light Infantry. He was married
with two young children.
He was injured in an explosion and taken to hospital, where he later died.
His father Robin, 60, from Pool-in-Wharfedale, West Yorkshire, said: "I'm proud of him as
a soldier and as a son. He did the Army proud."
"He would have got on. He was determined to go up the ladder and he would have got there,"
he said.
Cpl Cornish, who grew up near Otley, West Yorkshire, was married to Abby, 28, and had two children,
Ethan, aged three, and one-year-old Libby.
He joined the Army in Leeds and was stationed in Cyprus before serving in Northern Ireland, Sierra
Leone and Iraq.
His third tour of the country, in the 20th Armoured Brigade, was three months old when he was
killed.
The sacrifice that Matthew made is not the end. His family has made a sacrifice too. The terrorists
took from Ethan and Libby their father. A sacrifice they shall not even understand they have made
for many years to come.

A true friend
To Matt,
We never had the chance to say goodbye as you were taken before your time. You were a great man, a valiant soldier and an even better friend.
You will be sorely missed, until we meet again.
To a dear friend
Mathew I never thought that I would be writing about you on this site, and so sad that I am.
I have only known you since your tour in Cyprus, where I had met my husband who is your friend. Since then you have been a part of our lives and there are so many memories that we have had with you and Abby, and these will be cherised always.
When you and Abby left Edinburgh our weekends were at a loss, we missed you both. But I can say that David and I were so priviliged to have known you and been your friend.
I know that Ethan and Libby will grow up knowing what a special dad they had and a loving husband to Abby. Our thoughts and love is with them, we wont forget you Mathew. A special friend like you is hard to find, you will always be in our hearts and minds.
Sleep tight my friend, till we meet again.
Love Helena and Davidxxxxx
