Matthew Cornish - Hero
British soldier Cpl. Matthew Cornish gave his life for the future of Iraq. He leaves behind a wife
and two young children.
The father of a British soldier killed in Iraq has paid tribute to his son and said he was very
proud of him.
Corporal Matthew Cornish, 29, was serving with the 1st Battalion The Light Infantry. He was married
with two young children.
He was injured in an explosion and taken to hospital, where he later died.
His father Robin, 60, from Pool-in-Wharfedale, West Yorkshire, said: "I'm proud of him as
a soldier and as a son. He did the Army proud."
"He would have got on. He was determined to go up the ladder and he would have got there,"
he said.
Cpl Cornish, who grew up near Otley, West Yorkshire, was married to Abby, 28, and had two children,
Ethan, aged three, and one-year-old Libby.
He joined the Army in Leeds and was stationed in Cyprus before serving in Northern Ireland, Sierra
Leone and Iraq.
His third tour of the country, in the 20th Armoured Brigade, was three months old when he was
killed.
The sacrifice that Matthew made is not the end. His family has made a sacrifice too. The terrorists
took from Ethan and Libby their father. A sacrifice they shall not even understand they have made
for many years to come.

Remembering you
As I bought my poppy today as I always do, you flashed into my mind..I didn't know this memorial existed and just by chance I found it by typing in your name. I had left my thoughts on sundayleague.com at the time which you were a big part of especially planetfootball server (your home). I know you are still missed very much there and naming a forum after you was a very fitting tribute.
I want to say thank you Matt, also to all those who have fallen in conflict past and present, to all those left behind and to all those still out on the frontlines and all those who make up the British army, you make me so proud to be British.
You may be out of sight, never out of mind and to those closest to you deep within their very souls. Just because we wear poppies once a year does not mean we forget our troops, their bravery, commitment and honour for their country the rest of the year round. I'm sure you are at peace, I'm sure you are looking down on your brave family, it may have been cyberspace but it was truely an honour.
To Matts wife, children, family and friends...keep smiling, keep strong, my love to you all
Ashleigh
National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas.
I knew Matt years ago when I lived in Otley. I used to cycle with him & Henry Oddie.
My wife & I visited the National Memorial Arboretum today. I found Matt's name and said hi to him. It's weird how we never kept in touch & went our seperate ways but I still got a lump in my throat. (I'm not a softie either.)
The Memorial is magnificent and the arboretum is beautiful. Its a fitting tribute.
God bless you Matt.
Our thoughts and condolences are with your family.
In your home there are photo's
of a face more precious than gold
and to those who love and lost you
your memory will never grow old
Everyday they look at your photo's
at your face so loving and true
no wonder their heart is breaking
losing someone as precious as you
But each day you walk beside them
and when their life is through
I pray that god will take their hand
and lead them straight to you
God Bless Sweet Angel xxxxxxxx

Thinking of you Matthew x
If tears could build a stairway
and memories a lane
I would walk right up to heaven
to bring you home again
No farewell words were spoken
no time to say goodbye
You were gone before i knew it
and only God knows why
My heart still aches in sadness
and secret tears still flow
What it means to loose you
no one will ever know
Thinking of you Matthew keep looking down on your lovely family who love and miss you so much,Abby just wanted to send you and the children our love hope you are all ok x x x x

Those we Love remain with us,
for Love itself lives on.
Cherished memories never fade,
because our loved one is gone.
Those we Love can never be,
more than a thought apart,
for as long as there’s a memory
they are forever in our heart
Matthew,Abby,Ethan & Libby Lots of love to you all.
