Matthew Cornish - Hero
British soldier Cpl. Matthew Cornish gave his life for the future of Iraq. He leaves behind a wife
and two young children.

The father of a British soldier killed in Iraq has paid tribute to his son and said he was very
proud of him.

Corporal Matthew Cornish, 29, was serving with the 1st Battalion The Light Infantry. He was married
with two young children.

He was injured in an explosion and taken to hospital, where he later died.
His father Robin, 60, from Pool-in-Wharfedale, West Yorkshire, said: "I'm proud of him as
a soldier and as a son. He did the Army proud."

"He would have got on. He was determined to go up the ladder and he would have got there,"
he said.

Cpl Cornish, who grew up near Otley, West Yorkshire, was married to Abby, 28, and had two children,
Ethan, aged three, and one-year-old Libby.

He joined the Army in Leeds and was stationed in Cyprus before serving in Northern Ireland, Sierra
Leone and Iraq.

His third tour of the country, in the 20th Armoured Brigade, was three months old when he was
killed.

The sacrifice that Matthew made is not the end. His family has made a sacrifice too. The terrorists
took from Ethan and Libby their father. A sacrifice they shall not even understand they have made
for many years to come.

HANG IN THERE

I know that times are tough right now,
and you may feel alone,
but please remember others care,
and your not on your own.
Just try not to forget,
to take things day by day,
and any time you need me,
I'll be with you all the way.

With love to you Matt, Abby and family xx

When I have no one to turn to
And I am feeling kind of low,
When there is no one to talk to
And nowhere I want to go,
I search deep within myself
It is the love inside my heart
That lets me know my Angels are there
Even though we are miles apart

Thinking of you much love to you Abby, Ethan & Libby hope you are all keeping ok XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Memories

Hello Mathew,
I think of you often and about your family. I enjoy visiting and looking after the children, and helping Abby.

Thank you for the precious gift that you have left in our care. Looking after the children, bathing them and reading them bedtime stories gives me a lot of pleasure, and brings back lots of happy memories of doing this with you not so long ago, when you were small.

Fond memories of you will be in my heart, and remain with me always.

I came with Abby and the children to visit you on Sunday 11th, we had a lovely weekend together. I visit them quite often and really enjoy being part of their lives.

God Bless
Love Auntie

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends

Lydi & I came down to be with you yesterday. We were so lucky and bumped into Abby, Ethan, Libby & Abby’s mum. We had a nice chat about you. Being beside you and your family on this Remembrance Day was so moving. Abby, Ethan and Libby were all so brave, It has been over a year since I last saw them but I recognised them right away. Ethan looks so much like you. I wonder if he understands why people stare at him the way we do, one day he will understand that we see you so clearly when we look into his eyes. I laid wreath of poppies on you grave from all the lads in 5 Rifles, but especially from all the anti-tankers past and present. On this and every other remembrance day in my life, I will remember you.

A TRUE HERO

EVERY TEAR YOU SHED
I SILENTLY WIPE AWAY
I WISH I COULD BE WITH YOU
BUT I WASN`T MEANT TO STAY

IF ONLY I COULD HOLD YOU
AND SHOW YOU I AM STILL HERE
IF ONLY I COULD EASE YOUR PAIN
AND ERASE ALL OF YOUR FEAR

I HATE TO SEE YOU CRYING
I HATE TO SEE YOU SAD
WHERE I AM IS A BETTER PLACE
IT`S REALLY NOT THAT BAD

I AM YOUR STRENGTH WHEN LIVE SEEMS FUTILE
YOU`RE ANGEL IN THE SKY
I DIDN`T WANT TO LEAVE YOU
DIDN`T WANT TO MAKE YOU CRY

I AM WITH EVERY SECOND
EVERY HOUR OF THE DAY
AND WHENEVER YOU NEED DIRECTION
I WILL GUIDE YOU ON YOUR WAY

YOU NEVER ONCE LET ME DOWN
AND YOU ALWAYS SAW ME THROUGH
YOU STILL HAVE SO MUCH LOVE TO GIVE
AND TRULY I LOVE YOU

YOU WILL NEVER BE ALONE
SO SURROND YOURSELF WITH LOVE
AND TAKE COMFORT IN THE FACT
I`M WATCHING FROM ABOVE

We will be thinking of you Matthew, Abby and the children on rememberance day. Sending our love to you and your famalies x x x x x x x x

As the sun came up this morning
I watched you all below
You're hearts seemed so heavy
but there's something you should know,

Im not gone,don't worry
Im just a step ahead
and Im with you all
every single day

So when at times you miss me
I AM THERE
for you can not hide my spirit
It is with you all
forever

Much love to you Abby,Ethan & Libby XXXXX
